Beta-Carotene: A Nutraceutical from Extreme Algae
The richest natural source of the carotenoid beta-carotene is the microalgae Dunaliella salina . The massive accumulation of beta-carotene production by D. salina is inversely proportional to high salinity and nutrient deprivation conditions.
The cells from noninductive conditions are green; however, under stress conditions, cells turn red from a massive accumulation of carotenoids.
Of all the carotenoids, beta-carotene is the most prominent, accounting for 95% on a dry weight basis.
The nutraceutical use of this pigment is based on its function as a nontoxic vitamin A precursor, which is used in multivitamin and specialty formulations, because of its unique growth environment and halotolerance of saline conditions.
Dunaliella produces numerous carotenoid pigments, with the most prominent being beta-carotene (up to 14% dry weight), along with smaller amounts of alpha-carotene, lutein, and lycopene.
